5 Best Menswear Blogs

September 28, 2011

Today, men want just as much sartorial attention as the ladies and designers are encouraging more and more creative looks for the fellas. To mediate all of the industry jargon and sift through the lookbooks to find what’s noteworthy this season, consumers often heed the advice of bloggers. The world of menswear blogging is a lot like high school: it’s clique-y, competitive, and all about pretty girls and the coolest guys. But with a medium that’s heavily based on reissuing others’ work, it’s more about the personality than the content. With hundreds of wannabes out there trying their hand at fashion blogging and street photography, you’ll need this list of the most popular kids on Tumblr.

5. Gaws

Liam, the 19 year-old Frenchman behind Gaws, was recently selected by Tumblr to join a group of menswear bloggers at New York Fashion week and document the shows and designers. The aspiring photographer (his work is above and here as well) runs a blog conventional to what you’re prone to see on Tumblr – single-image posts and little commentary. However, staggered among his photographs from fashion shows and reposted images of double breasted blazers are intimate snapshots of his friends and posts on his favorite jazz, blues, classic rock and hip hop tracks. He often makes playlists of songs free for download, like this  collection of intimate music for a follower hoping to get lucky. And apparently, get lucky he did.

4. Put this On

A Basic Cashmere Wardrobe for Men

It doesn’t get much more versatile than a simple v-neck sweater in a simple, solid color. It doesn’t get much more classic, either. Build yourself a wardrobe of three pieces, and you’ll be set for years.

The next time you use the personal computer of that ill-dressed male buddy of yours, make sure you leave this site up for him to see when you’re done.  Straightforward, informative and practical, Put this On’s tagline is “A Web Series about Dressing Like a Grownup,” which far too many men seem incapable of doing.  This site will give you the nuts and bolts of expanding your wardrobe – things as basic as how to dry clothes properly. They also do a series called eBay Round Up in which they scour the site for great deals and list them all in one post for their followers. For the man that knows nothing about clothes, a few minutes browsing this site can have you dressing like a pro.

3. Urbane Menswear

Urbane Inquiry presents…

Carl Cunow of Onia

How did you decide to start doing swimwear?

“I started traveling a lot and going to the beach a lot. My fiancée’s family is in the beachwear business. I could never find a bathing suit that fit me or one that I liked that wasn’t crazy. I feel like if you dress nice in the day, you shouldn’t look like a slob on the beach. There was just stuff with logos on it. Spending $260 to have sea turtles on me just seemed kind of amateur. So I launched the line last year.”

You will be hard pressed to find original content on blogs. Much of it is recycled from other bloggers or other media sources. While Nerie and Gracie, the ladies behind Urbane Menswear, often do add popular posts to their site, they stand out in a sea of perpetual re-bloggers with their insightful interview series Urbane Inquiry.  Up-and-comers in the industry, such as designers, bloggers or photographers, do a Q&A with the girls on their inspirations, aspirations, and drive.  Nerie and Gracie are also always willing to give advice and feedback to their followers with sartorial conundrums. Need to find a pair of brogues with colorful soles (or find out what that even means)? These are your girls.

2. How to Talk to Girls at Parties

Lawrence Schlossman is a menswear hero. He runs two blogs himself, How To Talk to Girls at Parties and Sartorially Inclined, is a social media editor for Gilt Groupe site Park and Bond  and is an occasional columnist for GQ.com. HTTTGAP is Schlossman’s caustic everyday musings about high quality clothing, and the man knows his stuff. He’ll talk about the details such as proportion, fit, fabric – you name it. A huge fan of hip hop, Schlossman often discusses music or quotes lyrics as well. His blog has the bravado and wit of a rapper and he often dismisses critical follower comments with sarcasm or a quick insult. He told GQ, “if you don’t like what I do you should follow anyway, because I will win you over. I am so sure of this fact that if I do not win you over I will personally mail you a 100 dollar bill and a hand written apology for sucking.”

1. Fuck Yeah Menswear

“Bros:
A dissertation.
Ruminations on menswear domination.
Collection behind us.
Future in front of us.
Lost in each other’s eyes.
Nothing can stop us.
Just two bros.
Among many.
In the frat party we call #menswear.
Where the only rule is.
#browear before #hoewear.”

This anonymous blogger was just recently given a book deal for his side-splittingly hilarious and incredibly inventive posts. Fuck Yeah Menswear reads like hip-hop lyrics, taking inspiration from street photography or an ad campaign. From a requiem  for those addicted to raw denim to an ode to the collegiate look dripping in private-school hubris, nothing is too sacred for this blogger’s caustic humor. FYMW is best left to the fashion experts, though — this man’s lyrical flow is teeming with references to menswear designers, brands, and tailoring terminology that may go over the head of those with just a casual fashion interest.
