Best And Worst Dressed At The 2012 Golden Globes

January 20, 2012

On Sunday, Hollywood was on full display for the Annual Golden Globe Awards. And while comedian and host Ricky Gervais tried his darndest to entertain (but really, he was right when he said “the Golden Globes are just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem”) the real show was on the red carpet. Take a look at the best and worst dressed of the night. (Click to enlarge images.)

Best Dressed

Julianne Moore

Considered “chic” since the dawn of fashion, black is often used as a styling crutch for those wishing to look sharp without taking a risk. But the intriguing silhouette and romantic, delicate ruching makes Moore’s gown interesting.

Sofia Vergara

That shade of blue, that detail on the bodice, that perception of movement on such a fitted skirt – amazing. The simplistic styling perfectly complements the look.

Natalie Portman

Portman transformed herself into a modern-day classic 1950s Barbie doll in a hot-pink vintage silhouette. It was just feminine enough to be sexy without being cheesy.

Emma Stone

Stone looked stunningly sexy in a purple and red gown with a rocker edge.  She graciously chose colors that complimented her ginger locks, a relief after last year’s unfortunate peroxide incident. The strappy black platform heel, however, lacked class.

Jeremy Irons

Granted men have significantly less decisions to make while choosing an ensemble for an award show, few today choose to work a classic double-breasted tuxedo like Jeremy Irons. However, he did fall prey to one of, if not the most common menswear faux pas – too much break in his pants. A little ankle wouldn’t hurt.

Laura Dern

Older women often opt for a conservative long-sleeved option when dressing formally, which may look matronly. Dern managed to make the silhouette sexy, hiding any imperfections and emphasizing all her best assets.

Evan Rachel Wood

In an inspiring interpretation of old Hollywood glamour, the many details of Wood’s dress – scales, feathers and beads – work perfectly in complimenting colors and a body-hugging halter.

Claire Danes

Always classy, Danes wore a gown quite simple but beautifully elegant.

Angelina Jolie

Ms. Jolie is a simple dresser, often wearing all black and walking the red carpet in simple, albeit beautiful, gowns. She was in rare form on Sunday, looking glamorous in an ivory gown and seductive red accents on her lips and accessories.

Best Dressed: Rooney Mara

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star is clearly still comfortable with the dark and mysterious in a black gown, jet black hair, and a severe black cat eye. Her styling and lack of  a single piece of adornment drew all attention to her stunning face and dress.

Worst Dressed

Stacey Kiebler

Stacey Kiebler didn’t look bad at the awards. On the contrary, she looked stunning. Unfortunately, her dress is too similar to Jen Lawrence’s  knockout gown at last year’s Academy Awards, prompting inevitable comparisons that aren’t in Kiebler’s favor. In the battle of the blondes in red, Lawrence wins.

Amanda Peet

Peet’s gown was completely shapeless and brought to mind adorned doilies. Her thick black eye  makeup and hoop earings were also uninspiring.

Brad Pitt

As one of the few features of formal wear that men get creative with, styling is vital. Tucking his shaggy, unkempt hair behind his ears couldn’t mask the fact that Brad Pitt probably couldn’t care less about the Golden Globes.

Jane Lynch

This is an unfortunate cheap bridesmaids dress dyed black. Not nearly elegant enough for the occasion, Lynch’s dress was simply boring.

Paula Patton

In keeping with the wedding motif, Patton appeared to be wearing a high-end wedding dress dyed in the most obvious “surprising” color: canary yellow.

Amy Poehler

You never want to see a woman of such talent and popularity wearing something as dowdy, matronly and unflattering as this gown. Poehler is too young for the low bust and protruding abdomen this dress gave her.

Ricky Gervais

A real man knows proper attire for every occasion. In an attempt to make a statement that no one cared about, Gervais couldn’t even be bothered to button his tuxedo shirt all the way or take his sunglasses off. While surrounded by pristinely groomed men, his attempt to look cool came across as silly.

Mark Wahlberg

You’d think a man powerful enough to have prevented 9/11 could have prevented buying pants two sizes too big.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

This dress looks like a two-year-old’s art project. Oh, wait…

Worst Dressed: Kyle Richards

The shiny red material so often found on the prom rack at the mall is only made worse by the way the it pulls at the seams. The dress looks cheap, and the two giant diamond cocktail rings just add to the tackiness.
